K-5 Music
Instructor: Mrs. Smith
In Mrs. Smith's K-5 Music classes students enjoy a wide variety of experiences.

Starting in Kindergarten and continuing at increasing skill levels each year, students explore many different instruments.  Some of those are rhythm/percussion instruments, Orff instruments (xylophones and metallophones), drums, boomwhackers, recorders, autoharps, handbells, resonator bells, ukuleles and "found sound".

Students learn good singing skills while learning songs of many styles, including a large number of folk and traditional songs from America and other cultures and countries.

Students do rhythmic movements (AKA "dance"), creative dramatics, and create their own music and movement.  Students learn note-reading, counting rhythms and music appreciation through a variety of listening experiences  They learn about composers of many styles of music through history and the present.

Music is a Performance skill, therefore, we perform.  Grades two and four go to the Golden Friendship center, a five minute walk from school, to do a program each year.  Grades three and five do a program at Lincoln Elementary School each year.  Check the calendar for those dates.

Gr. 2 Cultural Study
Second graders had a classroom unit on cultures.  Mrs. Koch's mother, a Japanese woman, and her father came to visit their class.  The Japanese culture was further explored in Music class by learning a Japanese children's singing game and learning some Japanese words and phrases.  Mrs. Smith also played her Japanese shamisen (a sort of banjo) for the students.  They also got to see and try on some of Mrs. Smith's collection of kimonos from Japan.
Gr. 4 Program
Fourth grade students will be presenting a program at the Golden Friendship Center, 509 S. Belleview (just a couple blocks from Lincoln Elementary) at lunchtime on Thursday, March 24, 2010.  They will be entertaining the "grandmas and grandpas" who come there for lunch.  This is a "community service" - type project for the children.  They are learning about the joy of doing something for others.

Parents, friends and other relatives are welcome to attend.
Gr. 5 Program
Grade five students will be presenting a program in the forum of Lincoln Elementary at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2010.  This program culminates an extended time of preparation and makes up a large part of the curriculum and grading for this quarter.  The students are always VERY excited, looking forward to the experience of performing for their families. Please make plans so that your fifth grade child can attend.  All students play an important role in every music program.  The students depend upon each other for a successful program!
Gr. 3 Program
Grade three students will be presenting a program in the forum of Lincoln Elementary at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2010.
Gr. 2 Program
The second grade students presented a short program at the Golden Friendship Center, 509 S. Belleview (just a couple blocks from Lincoln Elementary School) on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010 at 12:30.  They entertained the "grandmas and grandpas" who come there for lunch.  This is a "community service" - type project for the children.  They are learning about the joy of doing something for others.

Parents, friends and other relatives are welcome to attend.
Grade 4 & 5 Recorders
Grade four students begin learning to play the recorder in the late fall each year.  They will need to purchase and inexpensive, school quality recorder from the school.  Students will also use this instrument in grades 5 and 6, so it is a good investment.  The music skills acquired in learning to play the recorder will transfer to any other musical instrument.  The specific fingering skills learned will transfer to all of the woodwind instruments, such as the saxophone, clarinet, flute, oboe and bassoon.

Fourth grade students receive a packet called Recorder Karate.  The songs, which increase in difficulty, have catchy accompaniment tracks to add excitement to the music the children are making.  As the students learn each new song they earn a "Recorder Karate Belt" of a different color, which is tied to their instrument.  The students get pretty excited to see their collection of Karate belts grow.  They typically will play a number of tunes in their late winter program at the Golden Friendship center.

Fifth grade students typically play songs in the context of their other music class experiences.  Reorder may also be included in their spring program.

Students are always urged to practice slowly and carefully.  Once the child can play the song with correct notes and counting and good tone, then he/she can play a bit faster.  Remember, PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!
